CUTHECORNER FRIENDS

1 - What is your name, weight, height, profession?
Peter Thain, 100kg, 182cm, currently working in an aluminium smelter.
2 - Where are you from?
Originally Northumberland, England, now Iceland.
3 - How long have you been with this casting?
27 years.
4 - How you came into this world of casting?
To improve my fishing.
5 - What are your personal records and accomplishments as a caster? What weights?
UKSF records
Fly
Single hand fly distance 64.40m
Double hand fly distance 78.25m
Spinning Reel
Single hand 7.5g 86.15m
Double hand 18g 127.92m
Double hand 30g 147.23m
Double hand 50g 174.45m*
Double hand 60g 204.76m
Double hand 100g 224.20m [UK record with .28mm line]
Double hand 125g 230.19m
Double hand 150g I personally recognise the record listed by Gary Setchell to be the UKSF record, and not the cast credited to me on the records page.
Multiplier
Double hand 18g 125.78m*
Double hand 100g 259.64m [former world record and still standing as the UK record with .28mm line]
The records marked with * have now been surpassed.
Former ICSF World record
Multiplier
Double hand 18g 114.64m
Longest ever cast in competition, 295yds 2ft something, made at the NWSA.
Major competitions
UKSF champion 1996 [2nd place 1995]
British championship 2nd place 2000/2001/2003/2004
Irish championship [as a guest] two consecutive years 2000 & 2001
Sportcast USA "Worlds" champion 2002 [2nd place 2003]
British Carp Casting Champion 1999
ICSF Event 9 World champion 2004 [silver medal 2006 & 2008]
ICSF Event 9 European champion 2007 [silver medal 2005]
Regional club wins, I really have no idea, at a guess in excess of 150 competitions?
6 - How do you see the sport of casting today?
Same as it's always been, a good bunch of lads having a laugh and trying to hit the horizon.
7 - Do you have any special memories in this casting?
Too many to mention.
8 - What is your favorite technique?
The one which casts the furthest for me.
9 - Who is your favorite caster?
For unsurpassed casting ability Primo Livenais, followed very closely by Danny for the same reason. For technical ability within their style Neil Mackellow, again followed very closely by Danny. For power and speed Paul Kerry, again followed closely by Danny. For absolute genius when it comes to designing rods, Terry Carroll...copied by many but never equalled.
10 - What are your preferences,(rods and reels)?
Rods, Zziplex, nothing comes close.
Reels, Abu for multiplier, Shimano for fixed spool.
11 - Multiplier or Fixed Spool ? Why?
Both! Because I enjoy casting both.
12 - Pendulum or OTG? Why?
Both! Because I enjoy casting both.
13 - How do you prepare for the competition?
Generally I don't if I'm casting regularly, going from one comp to the next is enough.
14 - Is it better to read the weather conditions in the sport, has the edge?
Just adapt to the conditions on the day, sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't
15 - Power or technique?
Technique
16 - How long do you think is necessary to devote to the training?
It depends how badly you want to improve? Training is only any good if you know what you are trying to achieve, and practice towards that goal.
17 - What you think is the real secret of casting?
It's all black magic :D. Pick a style that suits you, and be technically the best you can be with that style.
18 - "A dream of caster?
I'll tell you if I ever achieve it ;)
19 - What would you say to people who start in this sport?
Seek a good instructor, there are many out there but few who can take you to your limits.
Gracias Peter.
